The surgical removal of a portion of your liver is called liver surgery or liver resection. This procedure is usually performed to remove tumors. It is also referred to as a partial or full hepatectomy. Our surgeon, Dr. Prasad, has the experience in performing complicated and major liver surgery procedures using the latest techniques.
Reasons for Liver Surgery
A liver surgery or hepatectomy is performed to treat the following:
- Hepatic neoplasms, both benign or malignant
- Hepatocellular carcinoma
- Intrahepatic gallstones
- Parasitic cysts of the liver
Partial hepatectomy is performed to remove a portion of the liver from a live donor for liver transplantation.
Types of Liver Surgery
The following are the two types of surgical procedures performed on the liver:
- Liver Resection – The part of the liver, which has tumors, is removed
- Liver Ablation – Kills cancer cells by exposing them to high temperature or electric currents.
Your surgeon may perform the surgical procedure either through a traditional open procedure or minimally invasive techniques. This surgery is done under general anesthesia. The surgeon will remove the tumor and the surrounding liver tissue.
The healthy part of the liver that is left behind after the surgery will grow to replace the removed part. However, it will take a few weeks for it to return to its original size.
